Making your first cleaner can be as simple as adding water and vinegar to a spray bottle, add a few drops of your favorite essential oils and there you have it, you have just created yourself a natural product, free from chemicals, that can be used on appliances and glass all over your home.

Because most natural cleaning products are multipurpose cleaners, this means you use up less space when storing them as your supplies are all in a couple of bottles.

Store Bought Brands Are Toxic!

You might consider that when using the store brands, you are spraying petroleum based toxic cleaners onto surfaces and into the air releasing air born chemical particles onto your skin and into your lungs. Choosing to use these non-toxic cleaners gives you gives you confidence in knowing your families health is protected, and so is your home. People say that living in a less toxic home improves their sleep, makes babies less fussy, and boosts their overall sense of well being.

Why Knowingly Choose To Impact Your Body?

When we are exposed to the high levels of chemicals in cleaning products we are increasing our risk of developing allergies, contributing to the development of cancer, and reducing our immunity. With all the information today, it’s no wonder people are choosing to go green when picking cleaning products out, in their search to a healthier lifestyle.

Read The Ingredients Labels Carefully

When shopping for natural cleaning products its best to shop on line for the largest variety, or locally at your nearest health food store. As you search for these products be extra careful to read the labels. There are  some companies claiming  they are all natural, when in fact this might not be entirely true.

I often use most of these popular essential oils and herbs and they are pretty easy to find at your local shops or online these days:

1). Essential Oils

  • Citronella oil, tea tree oil, wintergreen oil, citrus oil are all common oils to use.
  • Ylang-Ylang essential oil works well as a natural antidepressant.
  • Mandarin essential oil works well as it is known to have an uplifting effect on your mood.
  • Lavender essential oil has a calming effect, and also helps to improve the bodies immune system.
  • Frankincense essential oil is used to purify the home and also has a calming effect.
  • Patchouli essential oil has a strong antiseptic and anti fungal property

All these essential oils are excellent to use in creating your own natural cleaning products.

2). Herbs:

  • Oregano acts as an antiviral and antibiotic

  • Sage acts as an antibacterial
  • Mint acts as an antibacterial
  • Thyme acts as an antibacterial and anti fungal
  • Rosemary acts as an antiviral
  • Basil acts as an anti fungal
  • Lemon Balm acts as an anti fungus

3). Things you should know about vinegar:

If using vinegar straight up it can effectively remove up to 80% of mold from surfaces. It also works beautifully on cutting boards to sanitize them. Just spray on overnight, don’t rinse off and continue to use in the morning. If it is  not diluted properly, vinegar is acidic, and can literally cut away at tile grout.

Never use straight vinegar on marble surfaces, used neat, it can cause severe damage. When mixed together in equal parts vinegar, and equal parts water, it can be used as a natural cleaning product anywhere in your home.

Vinegar works well as a disinfectant and deodorizer in your house as well. All in all it’s a very inexpensive way to clean your “space” and to ensure your family the safest alternative to store bought cleaners laced with toxins.

4). Things you should know about lemon juice:

Lemon juice makes a great natural substance to use while creating your own natural cleaning products. It can be used to dissolve soap scum and hard water deposits. Lemon juice is wonderful for cleaning and shining copper and brass. Fresh lemons are handy for cleaning as well.

Simply cut a lemon and sprinkle baking soda on the cut section. Use the lemon to scrub kitchen stains, surfaces and even dishes. Try mixing 1 cup of olive oil with ½ cup of lemon juice and you have just made yourself a bottle of furniture polish to use in your home.

If you have room in your garden, I can highly recommend growing a lemon tree! They have so many uses from keeping your body alkaline, to spicing up your culinary masterpieces, keeping surfaces sparkling clean to simply looking beautiful in your garden. Plus, neighbors love a few lemons left on their doorstep!

5). Things you should know about baking soda:

Baking soda is made from soda ash. It is a wonderful ingredient to have in your home when making your natural cleaning products. Baking soda is a terrific deodorizer.

Baking soda can be used to scrub surfaces the same way as commercial abrasive cleansers are used. Place a box of this amazing powder in your fridge or freezer to absorb unwanted odors. Add a cup of baking soda to your laundry to help eliminate odors.

Plus, you can whiten and brighten your teeth by brushing regularly with baking soda toothpaste. I must admit the taste does take a bit to get used to as it isn’t the most pleasant of flavors!
