Natural Beauty Essentials You Can Make At Home

In years gone by, I always bought the more high end beauty products as I had fallen for the slick marketing message. Look beautiful in 15 minutes! Go to sleep and wake up with super smooth skin! Of course I am making fun of the outrageous statements these companies make. And, whilst I make fun, we well know there is nothing fun or natural about these beauty products now. These “beauty” products are filled with toxic chemicals, sometimes with the barest nod to something “green” and in some cases nano particles, they are products to stay away from.

Just a few years ago, I chose to make the change to organic products to help my hives, and to continue the road to better selfcare. And, I enrolled in a class to learn how to make my own basic beauty products. This was such fun and once you have the basics covered, there is a whole new world of natural chemical free personal care products available for you to create. I love making my own balms, moisturizers and soaps. It’s an ever evolving process….

I think taking that first decision to learn how to make natural beauty essentials at home was a life changing one in many ways. The paths I have since gone down and the knowledge I have gained has been invaluable. Making the decision to make your own natural beauty essentials at home could be the first step to being kinder to the environment, as well as your pocket book, but most importantly yourself! Maybe you have considered it before, but have never tried making your own products. Go on, it’s a lot of fun and I guarantee you’ll enjoy yourself.

Make Your Own Chemical Free Beauty Essentials…

By making your own beauty essentials, you have absolute control over which ingredients are used and how fresh they are. The idea that cosmetics can be individually tailormade to suit specific needs and skin types means you will never be without a preparation that meets your unique needs perfectly.

Try Different Ingredients….

As you gain more confidence you will find yourself experimenting with different ingredients and making your own beauty essentials. There are some excellent online sites to help you get started with the necessary ingredients and I’ll list a few at the end of this article which I like.

Amazon is a great place where you can find an massive variety of raw organic wholesale ingredients for making body care products. It’s definitely one of the best place to find raw ingredients and I love the fact that with Amazon Prime you can receive your ingredients within 2 days, which is super convenient for me!

Now’s the time to jump in and be creative and begin the journey, I often like to call them adventures, choosing to live a healthy life full of the latest creations you yourself can make at home.

Beauty Is The Whole Body Deal

Remember beauty lies within, both literally and metaphorically. You need to look after your system by eating well and sleeping and exercising enough and the rest just follows. Beauty essentials you make yourself can be fun and rewarding.

Store Your Pampering Beauty Creations Carefully…

The way in which you store your products is important as well. Incorrect handling can ruin the effectiveness, and even cause damage to your skin. Storing the products in dark glass or plastic bottles and jars is the best option as these seal up well.

Strawberry Moisture Bar

  • 2 tbsp. Cocoa butter
  • 1 tsp. Thick honey
  • 3 strawberries

How To Make The Strawberry Moisture Bar

Heat the beeswax and cocoa butter together in a bowl over a pan of lightly simmering water. Add the honey and mix vigorously. You will need a mold or a small bowl for setting the bar.

Line this with parchment paper and put the strawberries in the bottom of the mold, then pour the beeswax and cocoa butter over the strawberries. These quantities make a fairly small bar.

Keep The Beeswax Quite Hot…

The key to this recipe is keeping the beeswax fairly hot so that it does not solidify. Once the bar is made refrigerate overnight till it hardens up. Then remove from the mold. There, your first beauty essential.

The strawberries add fragrance and color. They need not to be applied to the skin. Rub the bar between your hands to warm it for use. Then rub it into the skin. It can be used as a moisturizer or as a massage bar. Take note….. Do not let this bar get too warm or it may melt:).

Sunscreen ( enough for one application)

  • ½ tbsp. avocado oil
  • 11/2 tbsp. grated beeswax
  • 11/2 tbsp. shea butter
  • ½ tbsp. sesame oil
  • ½ tbsp. Coconut oil
  • 11/2 tbsp. Aloe vera oil
  • ½ tbsp. Canola oil
  • ¼ tsp. Of borax powder
  • 11/2 tbsp. Lavender hydrosol
  • ½ of a vitamin E gel capsule
  • 2-3 drops of grapeseed extract

All ingredients may be doubled or tripled to make more

How To Make The Sunscreen

Mix all ingredients except vitamin E, lavender, and borax. Heat to warm but not boiling.
In separate pan mix the remaining ingredients and heat until warm and the borax powder is dissolved.

Once warm whisk the two batches together using an electric stick mixer  until mixture becomes creamy. For safe storage of this product keep it refrigerated until ready to use.

Simple Honey Cream or Lotion

  • 1 tbsp. Beeswax
  • I tbsp. Acacia honey
  • 1 tbsp. Lanolin oil
  • 1 tbsp. Cocoa butter

How To Make This Lotion

First heat up the beeswax, by using a method known as the chocolate method. First take a pot of water and lightly simmer it, then place a small bowl over the pot and warm up the beeswax. This method is a much more delicate way to warm the wax up.

Slowly Add Honey…

Next take a one more small bowl and add in the honey. Slowly add the beeswax to the honey mixture and beat together vigorously. You need to be quick at this point as this stage ensures complete dispersion before the wax solidifies. Then add the last two ingredients. The best way to mix this mixture is in the blender.

Milk and Rosemary Moisturizer

  • 4 tbsp. Of whole milk or cream
  • 2-3 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary ( optional)

How To Do

This is a moisturizing mix for a relaxing bath. Add the milk and essential oil to the bath. The milk helps the oil dispense, so give the water a good swish. You may as you wish also take the fresh rosemary and wrap it in cheesecloth and place it under the faucet ( you may tie it at this point).

The infusion from the herbs in your bath, is very relaxing. Use this instead of the milk mixture.

Facial Masks

  • Mash 30 ml of avocado
  • Add 5 ml of rosewater
  • Add 5 ml of honey

Apply to the face, leave on 20 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water, then end by splashing face with cold water.

Mask for Oily Skin

  • Mash up small tomato
  • Add 20 ml of Kaolin oil
  • Add 5 ml of comfrey infusion

Mix this to a paste, adding more oil and infusion if necessary. Apply to face and leave on 10-15 minutes. Rinse off with water. This works well for blackheads and blemishes.

Mask for Oily Skin

  • Make a strong infusion with chamomile
  • Add 15ml of yogurt
  • Add 15 ml of oatmeal
  • Add 5 ml of honey

Apply mixture to the face, leave on for about 20 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water. This helps with blemishes. Oatmeal has a cleansing effect and honey acts as a antiseptic.

To make infusions

To make infusions simply submerge the herbal teas or dry herbs including flowers, stems and leaves in water. If using dried herbs use 1-2 tsp. For each 8 oz. Of water. Steep 10 minutes in boiling water. Then strain the infusion. If using fresh plant parts, use 3 tsp. for each pint of water.
